Itrasol 200

Itrasol 200 contains Itraconazole (200mg). Prescription required.

Treatment of fungal infections such as aspergillosis, histoplasmosis, blastomycosis; dermatophytosis (tinea/ringworm), pityriasis versicolor; candidiasis (oral/esophageal/vaginal); onychomycosis (nail fungal infection) as prescribed.

Itraconazole is a triazole antifungal that inhibits fungal CYP450 enzyme 14-alpha-demethylase, reducing ergosterol synthesis. This disrupts the fungal cell membrane and stops fungal growth, leading to clearance of infection.

Capsule: take exactly as prescribed. Usually taken with food (better absorption); swallow whole and do not crush/chew. Take at the same time each day; duration depends on infection type and site. Avoid taking with acid-suppressing medicines unless advised.

Nausea, abdominal pain, diarrhea, headache, dizziness, rash, elevated liver enzymes, peripheral edema

Prescription-only antifungal. Can cause liver injury—seek care for jaundice, dark urine, severe fatigue; monitoring may be needed, especially with prolonged therapy. May worsen or precipitate heart failure—avoid/use with extreme caution in patients with ventricular dysfunction/CHF. Numerous serious drug interactions due to strong CYP3A4 inhibition; do not self-medicate. Use caution in kidney/liver disease and in the elderly.

Strong interactions via CYP3A4: statins (simvastatin/lovastatin), antiarrhythmics (quinidine, dofetilide, dronedarone), benzodiazepines (midazolam, triazolam), ergot alkaloids, certain antihistamines (terfenadine/astemizole), some calcium channel blockers, warfarin, digoxin, cyclosporine/tacrolimus, oral hypoglycemics. Reduced absorption with PPIs/H2 blockers/antacids. Rifampicin, phenytoin, carbamazepine, efavirenz reduce itraconazole levels.

Store below 25°C in a dry place, protected from moisture and light. Keep in original pack and out of reach of children.
