Monograph
Glimepiride 2 mg
Type 2 diabetes mellitus (adult) to help control blood glucose along with diet and exercise; may be used alone or with other antidiabetic medicines as prescribed.
Glimepiride is a sulfonylurea that lowers blood glucose by stimulating insulin release from pancreatic beta cells. It also helps improve peripheral glucose utilization, reducing fasting and post-meal sugar levels.
Oral tablet. Take exactly as prescribed, usually once daily with breakfast or the first main meal. Swallow with water; do not skip meals after taking. Dose is individualized based on blood glucose; do not stop or change dose without medical advice.
Hypoglycaemia (low blood sugar), dizziness, headache, nausea, abdominal discomfort, diarrhoea, weight gain, skin rash, itching
Risk of hypoglycaemia increases with missed meals, excess exercise, alcohol, elderly age, kidney/liver impairment, or when used with other antidiabetics. Monitor blood glucose regularly. Use with caution in hepatic/renal disease; dose adjustment may be needed. Inform doctor if you have G6PD deficiency (risk of haemolysis). Stop and seek care for signs of severe allergy (rash, swelling, breathing difficulty) or persistent low sugar. Not indicated for type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis.
Other antidiabetics (insulin, metformin) may increase hypoglycaemia risk; alcohol increases risk of hypoglycaemia; beta-blockers may mask hypoglycaemia symptoms; corticosteroids, thiazide diuretics and thyroid hormones may reduce glucose-lowering effect; azole antifungals (e.g., fluconazole), macrolides, sulfonamides, quinolones may increase hypoglycaemia risk; rifampicin may reduce effect; ACE inhibitors may enhance glucose lowering.
