Monograph
Paracetamol (Acetaminophen) injection (strength/volume not specified)
Reduction of fever (pyrexia) and relief of mild to moderate pain when oral route is not suitable; adjunct for moderate to severe pain (e.g., postoperative pain)
Paracetamol inhibits prostaglandin synthesis in the central nervous system, producing analgesic and antipyretic effects. It has minimal peripheral anti-inflammatory activity and reduces fever by acting on the hypothalamic heat-regulating center.
For intravenous use only, administered by a healthcare professional as an IV infusion over the recommended duration. Dose is based on age/weight and total daily paracetamol limit; avoid taking any other paracetamol-containing medicines concurrently.
Nausea, vomiting, headache, injection site pain, flushing, low blood pressure (during infusion), increased liver enzymes, rash
Do not exceed the maximum total daily dose of paracetamol from all sources (risk of severe liver injury). Use with caution in liver disease, chronic alcohol use, malnutrition, dehydration, and severe renal impairment. Monitor liver function if prolonged use or in high-risk patients. Stop and seek care if allergic reactions (rash, swelling, breathing difficulty) occur.
Alcohol, warfarin/coumarin anticoagulants (with prolonged regular use), enzyme inducers (rifampicin, carbamazepine, phenytoin, phenobarbital), isoniazid, probenecid (may increase paracetamol levels), cholestyramine (reduces absorption for oral forms; less relevant for IV)
Store below 25°C, protect from light, do not freeze. Keep in original pack; use opened vial/bottle as per label and hospital protocol; discard if solution is discoloured or particles are present.
Perfalgan IV (Paracetamol), Paracet IV (Paracetamol), Pacimol IV (Paracetamol), Calpol IV (Paracetamol), Paramol IV (Paracetamol)
