Ketoconazole 2% w/v
Treatment and prevention of dandruff (pityriasis capitis) and seborrhoeic dermatitis of the scalp; also used for scalp fungal infections due to Malassezia.
Ketoconazole is an imidazole antifungal that inhibits fungal ergosterol synthesis by blocking 14-alpha demethylase. This damages the fungal cell membrane and reduces Malassezia growth, relieving flaking and itching.
For external use on scalp. Wet hair/scalp, apply sufficient shampoo, lather and leave on for 3–5 minutes, then rinse thoroughly. Commonly used 2 times weekly for 2–4 weeks; for maintenance, once weekly or as directed by a doctor.
Mild burning or stinging, itching, scalp irritation, dryness or oiliness of hair/scalp, hair texture changes, increased hair fall, redness
For external use only. Avoid contact with eyes; if it occurs, rinse with plenty of water. Do not use on broken/irritated skin unless advised. Stop use and consult a doctor if severe irritation, rash, swelling, or breathing difficulty occurs. Use with caution in children; consult doctor. If symptoms persist beyond 4 weeks, seek medical advice.
No significant systemic drug interactions expected with topical shampoo. If using topical corticosteroids on scalp, taper steroid gradually when starting ketoconazole to avoid rebound symptoms; avoid applying multiple scalp products together unless advised.
Store below 25°C, protected from heat and direct light. Keep cap tightly closed. Keep out of reach of children.
