Monograph
Amoxicillin 500 mg + Clavulanic Acid 125 mg (as potassium clavulanate) per tablet
Treatment of susceptible bacterial infections such as sinusitis, otitis media, tonsillitis/pharyngitis, acute bronchitis and pneumonia, urinary tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections, dental infections, and certain bone/joint infections.
Amoxicillin is a penicillin antibiotic that inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis, leading to bacterial death. Clavulanic acid inhibits beta-lactamase enzymes produced by resistant bacteria, protecting amoxicillin and extending its antibacterial spectrum.
Oral tablet. Take as prescribed by a doctor, usually with food (start of a meal) to reduce stomach upset. Swallow with water at evenly spaced intervals; complete the full course even if you feel better.
Diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, indigestion, rash, urticaria, headache, dizziness, oral/vaginal candidiasis
Prescription-only antibiotic; use only for bacterial infections. Do not use if allergic to penicillins/cephalosporins or with a history of severe hypersensitivity. Use with caution in kidney or liver impairment; dose adjustment may be needed and liver enzymes may be monitored. Stop and seek medical help if severe rash, breathing difficulty, facial swelling, or severe/persistent diarrhoea occurs (risk of C. difficile). Prolonged use may cause superinfection. Not recommended in suspected infectious mononucleosis (higher risk of rash).
Warfarin/other anticoagulants (may increase INR/bleeding risk), methotrexate (increased toxicity), allopurinol (increased rash risk), probenecid (increases amoxicillin levels), mycophenolate mofetil (reduced active metabolite exposure), oral typhoid vaccine (reduced effect)
Store below 25°C in a dry place, protected from moisture and light. Keep in original blister pack and out of reach of children.
