Treatment of acute hypotension (low blood pressure), especially associated with spinal/epidural anaesthesia, shock states, or during surgery/critical care to maintain blood pressure

Metaraminol is a sympathomimetic vasopressor that primarily stimulates alpha-1 adrenergic receptors causing peripheral vasoconstriction. This increases systemic vascular resistance and raises arterial blood pressure; it may also have indirect norepinephrine-releasing activity.

For intravenous use only under medical supervision (hospital setting). Administer as slow IV injection or IV infusion after dilution as prescribed; dose is titrated to blood pressure response with continuous monitoring of BP, heart rate and ECG.

Hypertension, bradycardia, tachycardia, palpitations, arrhythmias, headache, anxiety, nausea, vomiting, peripheral ischemia/cold extremities, injection-site irritation/extravasation

Use only with continuous hemodynamic monitoring. Risk of severe hypertension and reflex bradycardia. Correct hypovolemia before/along with vasopressor use. Caution in ischemic heart disease, arrhythmias, hyperthyroidism, peripheral vascular disease, diabetes, elderly patients. Avoid extravasation (may cause local tissue necrosis); ensure secure IV access. Use with caution in patients with glaucoma and in those receiving other sympathomimetics.

MAO inhibitors (risk of hypertensive crisis), tricyclic antidepressants/SNRIs (potentiation of pressor effect), linezolid (pressor response), halogenated anesthetics (arrhythmia risk), other vasopressors/sympathomimetics (additive effects), beta-blockers (may enhance reflex bradycardia)

Store below 25°C, protect from light, do not freeze. Keep in original pack and out of reach of children. Use immediately after opening/dilution as per hospital protocol.
