Monograph
Capsule
Bacterial infections susceptible to minocycline such as acne vulgaris and other skin/soft tissue infections, respiratory tract infections and other susceptible infections; lactic acid bacillus is used to help prevent/restore normal gut flora and reduce antibiotic-associated diarrhoea.
Minocycline is a tetracycline-class antibiotic that inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the 30S ribosomal subunit, thereby stopping bacterial growth. Lactic acid bacillus is a probiotic that helps restore healthy intestinal flora and may reduce diarrhoea during/after antibiotic therapy.
Take the capsule exactly as prescribed. Swallow whole with water; it may be taken with or without food (take with food if stomach upset occurs). Avoid taking at the same time as antacids/iron/calcium or dairy; keep a 2–3 hour gap. Complete the full course even if you feel better.
Nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal pain, loss of appetite, dizziness/vertigo, headache, photosensitivity, skin rash, vaginal/oral candidiasis
Prescription-only antibiotic—use only for bacterial infections. Do not use in pregnancy or in children <8 years due to risk of tooth discoloration and effects on bone growth. Use with caution in liver/kidney disease. May cause dizziness/vertigo—avoid driving if affected. Risk of photosensitivity—use sun protection. Seek urgent care for severe allergy, persistent diarrhoea, severe headache/visual changes (intracranial hypertension) or signs of liver injury.
Antacids containing aluminium/magnesium, calcium supplements, iron/zinc (reduced absorption), dairy products (reduced absorption), isotretinoin or other retinoids (increased risk of intracranial hypertension), warfarin (may increase anticoagulant effect), penicillins (may reduce bactericidal effect), oral contraceptives (may reduce efficacy in some cases), methoxyflurane (nephrotoxicity risk), anticonvulsants like phenytoin/carbamazepine (may reduce antibiotic levels)
Store below 25°C in a cool, dry place away from light and moisture. Keep in original blister/strip and out of reach of children.
