Treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and erosive esophagitis, healing and prevention of gastric/duodenal ulcers, ulcers associated with NSAID use, part of H. pylori eradication regimen (with antibiotics), Zollinger–Ellison syndrome/pathological hypersecretory conditions
Esomeprazole is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) that irreversibly blocks the H+/K+ ATPase enzyme (proton pump) in gastric parietal cells. This markedly reduces gastric acid secretion, relieving acidity and allowing ulcers/erosions to heal.
Take orally as directed by a doctor, usually once daily. Swallow whole with water; do not crush or chew (enteric-coated). Preferably take 30–60 minutes before food (often before breakfast). Duration depends on the condition.
Headache, abdominal pain, nausea, diarrhea, constipation, flatulence, dizziness
Use with caution in liver disease. Long-term use may increase risk of low magnesium, vitamin B12 deficiency, bone fractures, and gastric infections (e.g., C. difficile). May mask symptoms of gastric cancer—seek medical advice for alarm symptoms (unexplained weight loss, persistent vomiting, blood in stools). Stop and seek care if severe rash/allergic reaction occurs.
Clopidogrel (reduced antiplatelet effect), warfarin (INR changes), phenytoin, diazepam, digoxin (levels may increase), methotrexate (high-dose toxicity risk), ketoconazole/itraconazole/iron salts (reduced absorption), atazanavir/nelfinavir (reduced levels; avoid), tacrolimus (increased levels)
Store below 25°C in a dry place, protected from moisture and light. Keep in original blister pack and out of reach of children.
