Take orally as prescribed by the doctor, usually once daily or in divided doses depending on infection severity. May be taken with or without food (taking with food can reduce stomach upset). Swallow whole with water and complete the full antibiotic course.
Diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, indigestion, flatulence, headache, dizziness, skin rash, itching, raised liver enzymes
Prescription-only antibiotic; use only for suspected/confirmed bacterial infection. Do not use in patients with known allergy to cephalosporins; use caution in penicillin allergy due to possible cross-reactivity. Use with caution in kidney impairment (dose adjustment may be needed) and in history of colitis; persistent/severe diarrhoea may indicate antibiotic-associated colitis. May cause hypersensitivity reactions; stop and seek care if rash, swelling, breathing difficulty occur. Prolonged use may cause superinfection; not effective for viral infections.
Warfarin/other anticoagulants (increased bleeding risk/INR), probenecid (may increase antibiotic levels), live oral typhoid vaccine (reduced response), other nephrotoxic drugs (additive kidney risk), antacids/H2 blockers may reduce absorption in some patients (separate if advised)
