Use with caution (alcohol can worsen acidity/GERD symptoms)
Monograph
Pantoprazole 40 mg (as enteric-coated tablet)
Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), heartburn/acid reflux, erosive esophagitis, peptic/duodenal ulcer, gastritis, prevention of NSAID-induced ulcers, Zollinger–Ellison syndrome (as prescribed)
Pantoprazole is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) that irreversibly blocks the H+/K+ ATPase (proton pump) in gastric parietal cells. This reduces stomach acid secretion and helps heal acid-related irritation and ulcers.
Tablet: take as advised by doctor, usually 1 tablet once daily 30–60 minutes before food (preferably before breakfast). Swallow whole; do not crush/chew (enteric-coated). Duration depends on condition.
headache, diarrhea, nausea, abdominal pain, flatulence, vomiting, dizziness
Use with caution in severe liver disease. Long-term use may increase risk of low magnesium, vitamin B12 deficiency, bone fractures, and Clostridioides difficile-associated diarrhea; consult doctor if persistent diarrhea occurs. May mask symptoms of gastric cancer—seek medical advice for alarm symptoms (unexplained weight loss, vomiting blood, black stools, difficulty swallowing). If used for long durations, periodic monitoring may be needed.
Warfarin (INR changes), methotrexate (high-dose; increased levels), digoxin (risk with low magnesium), diuretics (may worsen hypomagnesemia), drugs needing acidic pH for absorption (ketoconazole/itraconazole/posaconazole, erlotinib), atazanavir/nelfinavir (reduced effect), clopidogrel (generally less interaction than omeprazole but caution)
