Use with caution (alcohol can worsen acidity/GERD symptoms)
Monograph
Pantoprazole 40 mg (as Pantoprazole Sodium)
Treatment of acid reflux (GERD), heartburn, erosive esophagitis, peptic/duodenal ulcers; prevention of NSAID-induced gastric ulcers; part of H. pylori eradication therapy with antibiotics; Zollinger–Ellison syndrome (excess acid secretion).
Pantoprazole is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) that irreversibly blocks the gastric H+/K+ ATPase (proton pump) in stomach parietal cells. This reduces acid production and helps heal acid-related damage in the food pipe and stomach.
Tablet, oral. Usually taken once daily 30–60 minutes before food (preferably before breakfast). Swallow whole with water; do not crush or chew. Dose and duration as advised by the doctor.
Headache, diarrhea, nausea, abdominal pain, flatulence, constipation, dizziness
Use with caution in severe liver disease. Long-term use may increase risk of low magnesium, vitamin B12 deficiency, bone fractures, and infections (e.g., C. difficile diarrhea, pneumonia). May mask symptoms of gastric cancer—seek medical advice if you have unexplained weight loss, persistent vomiting, black stools, or difficulty swallowing. If used for prolonged periods, periodic monitoring may be needed.
Warfarin (monitor INR), methotrexate (especially high-dose), digoxin (risk with low magnesium), diuretics (may worsen low magnesium), clopidogrel (possible reduced activation—consult doctor), drugs needing acidic pH for absorption (ketoconazole, itraconazole, posaconazole, atazanavir/nelfinavir, erlotinib), iron salts
