Monograph
Tablet
Acid reflux (GERD), heartburn, erosive esophagitis, gastric and duodenal ulcers, Zollinger–Ellison syndrome; prevention of NSAID-induced ulcers (as prescribed)
Pantoprazole is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) that irreversibly blocks the gastric H+/K+ ATPase (proton pump) in stomach parietal cells. This reduces gastric acid secretion and helps heal acid-related damage to the food pipe and stomach.
Oral tablet (usually enteric-coated). Take as directed by doctor, typically once daily 30–60 minutes before food (preferably before breakfast). Swallow whole; do not crush or chew.
Headache, diarrhea, nausea, abdominal pain, flatulence, constipation, dizziness
Use with caution in severe liver disease. Long-term or high-dose use may increase risk of low magnesium, vitamin B12 deficiency, bone fractures, and certain infections (e.g., C. difficile diarrhea). Seek medical help for persistent diarrhea, black stools, vomiting blood, unexplained weight loss, or difficulty swallowing. May mask symptoms of gastric cancer—evaluate alarm symptoms before prolonged use.
Warfarin (monitor INR), methotrexate (high dose), digoxin (via low magnesium), diuretics (risk of low magnesium), clopidogrel (generally less interaction than omeprazole but use on advice), antifungals needing acid for absorption (ketoconazole/itraconazole), HIV protease inhibitors (e.g., atazanavir), erlotinib
Store below 25°C in a dry place. Protect from moisture and light. Keep in original strip and out of reach of children.
