Use with caution (alcohol can worsen acidity/GERD symptoms)
Monograph
Tablet
Treatment of acid-related disorders such as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), heartburn/acid reflux, erosive esophagitis, peptic ulcer disease (gastric/duodenal ulcer), and as part of H. pylori eradication therapy (with antibiotics).
Rabeprazole is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) that irreversibly blocks the gastric H+/K+ ATPase (proton pump) in stomach parietal cells. This reduces acid secretion and helps heal acid-related damage to the food pipe and stomach/duodenum.
Tablet to be swallowed whole with water; do not crush or chew. Usually taken once daily, preferably 30 minutes before food (often before breakfast) or as directed by the physician. Duration depends on the condition; complete the prescribed course.
Headache, diarrhea, nausea, abdominal pain, constipation, flatulence, dizziness
Use with caution in severe liver disease. Long-term use may increase risk of vitamin B12 deficiency, low magnesium, bone fractures, and stomach infections (e.g., C. difficile). Seek medical advice if symptoms persist, recur frequently, or if you have alarm signs (unexplained weight loss, vomiting blood, black stools, difficulty swallowing). May cause false-positive chromogranin A tests; inform your doctor before lab tests.
Atazanavir/nelfinavir (avoid), warfarin (monitor INR), digoxin (risk of toxicity if hypomagnesemia), methotrexate (high-dose; may increase levels), ketoconazole/itraconazole/posaconazole (reduced absorption), erlotinib (reduced absorption), clopidogrel (possible reduced effect; consult doctor), iron salts (reduced absorption)
Store at room temperature below 25°C, protected from moisture and light. Keep in original blister pack and out of reach of children.
