Monograph
Tablet
Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and heartburn, erosive esophagitis, peptic/duodenal ulcers, Zollinger–Ellison syndrome and other acid hypersecretory conditions; prevention/treatment of NSAID-associated gastric ulcer (as advised by doctor).
Pantoprazole is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI). It irreversibly blocks the H+/K+ ATPase (proton pump) in gastric parietal cells, thereby reducing gastric acid secretion and allowing ulcers/erosions to heal.
Tablet; swallow whole with water (do not crush/chew). Usually taken once daily, preferably 30–60 minutes before food (often before breakfast) or as directed by the doctor; duration depends on condition.
Headache, diarrhoea, nausea, abdominal pain, flatulence, vomiting, dizziness
Use with caution in liver disease. Long-term use may increase risk of low magnesium, vitamin B12 deficiency, bone fractures, and kidney inflammation; seek medical help for persistent diarrhoea (possible C. difficile), severe abdominal pain, black stools, or vomiting blood. May mask symptoms of gastric cancer—consult doctor if alarm symptoms/weight loss occur. Do not stop/start or prolong therapy without medical advice.
Warfarin (INR changes), methotrexate (high-dose; increased levels), digoxin/diuretics (risk of low magnesium), clopidogrel (possible reduced activation; less than omeprazole but caution), atazanavir/nelfinavir (reduced absorption; avoid), ketoconazole/itraconazole/iron salts (reduced absorption), erlotinib (reduced absorption)
Store below 25°C, protected from light and moisture. Keep in original blister pack and out of reach of children.
