Monograph
Tablet
Treatment of acidity and heartburn due to gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), erosive esophagitis, peptic/duodenal ulcers; prevention of NSAID-induced ulcers; part of H. pylori eradication regimens (with antibiotics) as prescribed.
Pantoprazole is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI). It irreversibly blocks the gastric H+/K+ ATPase (proton pump) in stomach lining cells, thereby reducing acid production and allowing ulcers and inflamed food pipe to heal.
Tablet for oral use. Usually taken once daily, preferably 30–60 minutes before food (often before breakfast); swallow whole with water, do not crush/chew. Dose and duration as advised by a doctor.
Headache, diarrhea, nausea, abdominal pain, flatulence, constipation, dizziness
Use with caution in severe liver disease. Long-term use may increase risk of vitamin B12 deficiency, low magnesium, bone fractures, and Clostridioides difficile–associated diarrhea; consult doctor if symptoms persist or if you have weight loss, vomiting blood, black stools, or difficulty swallowing. May mask symptoms of gastric cancer—seek evaluation for alarm symptoms. Use with caution in patients with osteoporosis risk. Not for immediate relief of acute heartburn.
Atazanavir/nelfinavir (avoid), warfarin (monitor INR), methotrexate (high-dose—may need withholding), digoxin/diuretics (risk of low magnesium), clopidogrel (possible reduced activation—clinical relevance less than omeprazole but use caution), ketoconazole/itraconazole/iron salts (reduced absorption), erlotinib (reduced effect)
