Uses & Benefits
Relief and prevention of bronchospasm in bronchial asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) including chronic bronchitis and emphysema
How It Works
Salbutamol is a short-acting selective beta-2 agonist bronchodilator. It relaxes smooth muscle in the airways, leading to widening of bronchi and rapid relief from wheeze, breathlessness and chest tightness.
Directions for Use
For inhalation use only via a compatible capsule-based dry powder inhaler/rotahaler as prescribed. Do not swallow the capsule; place capsule in device, pierce and inhale the powder deeply. Use at the same times if on regular dosing; rinse mouth after use if advised.
Not for swallowing; inhalation use only. Use with caution in heart disease (arrhythmias, ischemic heart disease), hypertension, hyperthyroidism, diabetes, seizure disorders, and in patients sensitive to sympathomimetics. Overuse may worsen asthma control; seek medical help if needing more frequent doses or if symptoms worsen. May cause hypokalaemia; caution with severe asthma and concomitant diuretics/xanthines/steroids. Paradoxical bronchospasm can occur—stop and seek care if breathing worsens after use.
Drug Interactions
Non-selective beta-blockers (e.g., propranolol) may reduce effect and trigger bronchospasm, diuretics/corticosteroids/xanthines (increased risk of hypokalaemia), MAO inhibitors/tricyclic antidepressants (enhanced cardiovascular effects), digoxin (may reduce digoxin levels), other sympathomimetics (additive side effects)
