Relief and prevention of bronchospasm in bronchial asthma, chronic bronchitis and COPD; symptomatic relief of wheezing and shortness of breath; prevention of exercise-induced bronchospasm (as advised).
How It Works
Salbutamol is a short-acting selective beta-2 adrenergic agonist (SABA). It relaxes bronchial smooth muscle, leading to bronchodilation and easier breathing.
Directions for Use
Oral tablet. Take as prescribed by the doctor, usually 2–3 times daily. Can be taken with or without food; taking after food may reduce stomach upset. Do not exceed the prescribed dose; for acute breathing difficulty, inhaled reliever is usually preferred—seek medical advice.
Side Effects
Tremor, headache, palpitations, fast heartbeat (tachycardia), nervousness, muscle cramps, nausea, dizziness, throat irritation (rare with tablets), low potassium (hypokalaemia)
Warnings & Precautions
Use with caution in heart disease (arrhythmias, ischemic heart disease), hypertension, hyperthyroidism, diabetes, seizure disorders, and in elderly. May cause tachycardia and tremor; avoid exceeding dose. Risk of hypokalaemia, especially with high doses or with diuretics/corticosteroids; monitor if at risk. Seek urgent care if breathing worsens or relief is inadequate. Not a substitute for anti-inflammatory controller therapy in persistent asthma.
Drug Interactions
Beta-blockers (e.g., propranolol) may reduce effect and worsen bronchospasm, diuretics (loop/thiazide) may increase hypokalaemia risk, corticosteroids may increase hypokalaemia risk, theophylline/other xanthines may increase side effects and hypokalaemia risk, MAO inhibitors/tricyclic antidepressants may increase cardiovascular effects, digoxin levels may decrease
