Monograph
Tablet
Prevention (prophylaxis) of migraine attacks; prevention of vertigo due to vestibular disorders (e.g., recurrent vestibular vertigo).
Flunarizine is a selective calcium channel blocker that reduces calcium influx in neurons and vascular smooth muscle. This helps stabilize blood vessels and decreases neuronal excitability, reducing frequency and severity of migraine attacks and vestibular symptoms.
Tablet for oral use. Take as prescribed by the doctor, usually once daily at night (may cause drowsiness). Can be taken with or without food; take at the same time each day and swallow with water. Not for acute migraine pain relief.
Drowsiness/sedation, weight gain/increased appetite, fatigue, dizziness, dry mouth, nausea, constipation, depression/low mood, tremor or other extrapyramidal symptoms
May cause sedation—avoid driving or operating machinery until you know how it affects you. Use with caution/avoid in patients with depression, Parkinson’s disease, or history of extrapyramidal symptoms as it can worsen these. Long-term use may lead to movement disorders (tremor, rigidity) especially in elderly; stop and consult doctor if such symptoms occur. Use cautiously in hepatic impairment. Not intended for acute treatment of migraine attack.
Alcohol and other CNS depressants (increased drowsiness), sedating antihistamines, benzodiazepines, opioids (additive sedation); antipsychotics and metoclopramide (increased risk of extrapyramidal symptoms); other drugs causing parkinsonism; CYP enzyme inhibitors/inducers may affect levels (clinical relevance varies).
Store below 25°C in a cool, dry place. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
