Uses & Benefits
Treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus to improve glycaemic control (as an adjunct to diet and exercise). Also used to reduce risk of hospitalization for heart failure and to slow progression of chronic kidney disease in appropriate patients (as per prescriber advice).
How It Works
Dapagliflozin is an SGLT2 inhibitor that reduces glucose reabsorption in the kidneys, increasing urinary glucose excretion and lowering blood sugar. It also causes mild diuresis and natriuresis, which can help in heart failure and kidney protection in selected patients.
Directions for Use
Take by mouth once daily, preferably at the same time each day, with or without food. Swallow whole with water. Dose and duration should be as prescribed; maintain adequate hydration and follow diet/exercise advice.
Side Effects
Genital fungal infection, urinary tract infection, increased urination, thirst, dizziness, low blood pressure, hypoglycaemia (when used with insulin/sulfonylureas), nausea
Warnings & Precautions
Not for type 1 diabetes. Risk of diabetic ketoacidosis (can occur even with near-normal sugars); seek urgent care for nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, rapid breathing, confusion. Can cause dehydration/low BP—use caution in elderly, diuretic users, low BP. Genital infections and rare necrotizing fasciitis (Fournier’s gangrene) reported—seek care for genital/perineal pain/swelling/fever. Monitor kidney function; may be ineffective at low eGFR and may need discontinuation as per guidelines. Hold before major surgery/acute illness (sick-day rules) as advised by doctor.
