Tablet
Type 2 diabetes mellitus to improve glycaemic control along with diet and exercise; used alone or in combination with other antidiabetic medicines (e.g., metformin, sulfonylurea, insulin) as prescribed.
Sitagliptin is a DPP-4 inhibitor. It increases levels of incretin hormones (GLP-1 and GIP), which enhance glucose-dependent insulin release and reduce glucagon secretion, helping lower blood sugar with a low risk of hypoglycaemia when used alone.
Oral tablet. Take as directed by a doctor, usually once daily, with or without food, at the same time each day. Dose adjustment may be needed in kidney disease; do not stop or change dose without medical advice.
Headache, nasopharyngitis, upper respiratory tract infection, nausea, diarrhoea, stomach discomfort
Not for type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis. Use with caution in kidney impairment (dose adjustment required); monitor renal function. Rare risk of pancreatitis—seek care for severe persistent abdominal pain. Hypoglycaemia risk increases when combined with sulfonylureas/insulin. Severe joint pain and serious allergic reactions (rash, angioedema, anaphylaxis) have been reported; stop and seek medical help if symptoms occur.
Insulin, sulfonylureas (e.g., glimepiride) (increased hypoglycaemia risk), digoxin (may increase digoxin levels), strong inducers affecting glycaemic control (e.g., corticosteroids, thiazide diuretics)
