Tablet
Type 2 diabetes mellitus: to improve blood glucose control along with diet and exercise; may be used alone or with other antidiabetic medicines as prescribed.
Sitagliptin is a DPP-4 inhibitor that increases levels of incretin hormones (GLP-1 and GIP). This enhances glucose-dependent insulin release and reduces glucagon secretion, lowering fasting and post-meal blood sugar with low risk of hypoglycaemia when used alone.
Tablet: take exactly as prescribed, usually once daily, with or without food, at the same time each day. Swallow whole with water; do not stop without medical advice. Dose adjustment may be needed in kidney disease.
Headache, nasopharyngitis (common cold), sore throat, diarrhoea, nausea, stomach discomfort, dizziness
Not for type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis. Use with caution and dose-adjust in renal impairment; monitor kidney function. Rare risk of pancreatitis (seek care for severe persistent abdominal pain), severe joint pain, hypersensitivity reactions (rash, swelling, breathing difficulty) and bullous pemphigoid. Hypoglycaemia risk increases when combined with insulin or sulfonylureas; dose reduction of the latter may be needed. Inform doctor about history of pancreatitis, kidney disease, heart failure, or allergy to sitagliptin.
Insulin and sulfonylureas (increased hypoglycaemia risk), Digoxin (may increase digoxin levels—monitor if used together).
Store at room temperature (below 25°C), protected from moisture and light. Keep in original blister pack and out of reach of children.
