Tablet
Treatment of metabolic acidosis; urinary alkalinisation (to reduce urine acidity) in certain urinary conditions; relief of acid indigestion/heartburn due to excess stomach acid (if prescribed)
Sodium bicarbonate is a systemic alkalinising agent. It neutralises excess acid by buffering hydrogen ions, thereby increasing blood bicarbonate in acidosis and raising urine pH for urinary alkalinisation.
Take as advised by physician. Swallow the enteric-coated tablet whole with water; do not crush/chew. May be taken after food to reduce gastric irritation. Maintain adequate fluid intake unless restricted.
Nausea, vomiting, abdominal bloating, belching, stomach discomfort, increased thirst, edema (fluid retention), metabolic alkalosis, high sodium levels
Use with caution in hypertension, heart failure, kidney disease, edema, liver cirrhosis, and salt-restricted diets due to sodium load. Overuse may cause metabolic alkalosis, electrolyte imbalance (e.g., low potassium), and fluid retention. Seek medical advice if severe vomiting, weakness, muscle cramps, confusion, or swelling occurs. Not for prolonged self-medication for acidity.
Tetracyclines (reduced absorption), fluoroquinolones (reduced absorption), iron salts (reduced absorption), ketoconazole/itraconazole (reduced absorption), methenamine (reduced efficacy due to alkaline urine), lithium (may alter levels), diuretics/corticosteroids (increased risk of hypokalemia/alkalosis), salicylates (may affect excretion)
Store below 25°C in a dry place, protected from moisture and light. Keep in original blister pack. Keep out of reach of children.
Sodium Bicarbonate Tablet 500 mg/1000 mg (generic), Sodamint Tablet, Sodiac Tablet, Alkasol (urinary alkaliser solution), Citralka Liquid (urinary alkaliser)
