Monograph
Sucralfate (1000mg/10ml)
Treatment and prevention of peptic ulcer disease (duodenal/gastric ulcers), gastritis and gastro-oesophageal reflux symptoms where mucosal protection is needed.
Sucralfate is a locally acting mucosal protectant. In the presence of gastric acid it forms a viscous, adhesive paste that binds to ulcerated/eroded mucosa, creating a protective barrier against acid, pepsin and bile salts and promoting healing.
Oral suspension. Shake well before use. Usually taken on an empty stomach (about 1 hour before meals and at bedtime) as directed by a doctor. Keep a gap of at least 2 hours from other oral medicines to avoid reduced absorption.
Constipation, nausea, dry mouth, indigestion, abdominal discomfort, dizziness
Use with caution in severe kidney disease (risk of aluminium accumulation). May cause constipation; ensure adequate fluids/fibre if suitable. Can reduce absorption of many medicines—separate dosing by at least 2 hours. Seek medical advice if symptoms persist, vomiting blood/black stools occur, or severe abdominal pain develops.
Fluoroquinolones (ciprofloxacin/norfloxacin/ofloxacin), tetracyclines, levothyroxine, digoxin, phenytoin, warfarin, iron salts, ketoconazole/itraconazole, antacids (may affect binding; separate by 30 minutes to 2 hours)
Store below 25°C, protect from light and moisture, keep cap tightly closed. Do not freeze. Keep out of reach of children.
