Treatment and prevention of vitamin D deficiency, nutritional rickets and osteomalacia, adjunct in osteoporosis management, support for calcium absorption in low vitamin D states
Cholecalciferol is converted in the body to active vitamin D (calcitriol), which increases intestinal absorption of calcium and phosphate. This helps restore normal bone mineralization and maintains healthy muscle and bone function.
Oral solution. Take as directed by the physician; commonly 5 ml (60,000 IU) once weekly for 6–8 weeks, then maintenance as advised. May be taken with or after food (preferably with a meal containing fat). Use a measuring device; do not exceed recommended dose.
Nausea, vomiting, constipation, abdominal pain, loss of appetite, headache, weakness, increased thirst, increased urination
Do not use in hypercalcemia, hypervitaminosis D, or known hypersensitivity to vitamin D. Use with caution in kidney disease, kidney stones, sarcoidosis or other granulomatous disorders, and in patients on calcium supplements. Overdose can cause hypercalcemia with confusion, arrhythmias and kidney damage; seek medical help if symptoms occur. Monitor calcium/phosphate and vitamin D levels if used long-term or in high doses.
Thiazide diuretics (risk of hypercalcemia), digoxin and other cardiac glycosides (arrhythmia risk with hypercalcemia), anticonvulsants like phenytoin/phenobarbital and rifampicin (reduced vitamin D effect), corticosteroids (reduced vitamin D action), cholestyramine/orlistat (reduced absorption), aluminum-containing antacids in renal impairment (risk of aluminum toxicity)
