Tetracycline Hydrochloride IP 1% w/w (10 mg/g) eye ointment
Bacterial eye infections such as conjunctivitis, blepharitis and other superficial ocular infections caused by susceptible organisms
Tetracycline is a broad-spectrum antibiotic that inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the 30S ribosomal subunit. This prevents growth and helps clear susceptible bacterial infections in the eye.
For ophthalmic use only. Apply a small ribbon of ointment inside the lower eyelid of the affected eye(s) as prescribed (often 2–4 times daily). Avoid touching the tube tip to the eye/skin; use regularly for the full course even if symptoms improve.
Temporary burning or stinging, eye irritation, redness, blurred vision after application, itching, watery eyes
Do not use if allergic to tetracyclines. Not for viral or fungal eye infections. Use with caution in children, pregnant or breastfeeding women—consult a doctor. Remove contact lenses before use and avoid wearing them during active infection unless advised. If severe irritation, swelling, rash, worsening pain, or no improvement in 48–72 hours, seek medical advice.
No significant systemic interactions expected with ophthalmic use; avoid using other eye medicines simultaneously—keep a 10–15 minute gap and apply ointment last. Concurrent topical ocular antibiotics may increase irritation.
Store below 25°C in a cool, dry place; protect from light. Keep tube tightly closed; do not freeze.
