Treatment of symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) such as difficulty in urination, weak stream, increased frequency/urgency and incomplete bladder emptying.

Tamsulosin is a selective alpha-1A adrenergic receptor blocker that relaxes smooth muscles in the prostate and bladder neck. This reduces resistance to urine flow and improves urinary symptoms in BPH.

Take by mouth as advised by the doctor, usually once daily after the same meal each day (commonly after breakfast). Swallow the tablet/capsule whole; do not crush or chew modified-release forms. If a dose is missed, take the next dose at the usual time; do not double the dose.

Dizziness, headache, weakness, nasal congestion/runny nose, abnormal ejaculation (reduced/semen backflow), nausea, orthostatic hypotension, palpitations

May cause dizziness/fainting due to low blood pressure—rise slowly from sitting/lying positions and use caution while driving. Inform your eye surgeon before cataract/glaucoma surgery (risk of Intraoperative Floppy Iris Syndrome). Use with caution in severe liver impairment; caution in severe kidney disease. Not indicated for women and children. Seek urgent care for allergic reactions or painful prolonged erection (priapism).

Other alpha-blockers (prazosin, doxazosin, terazosin), antihypertensives, PDE5 inhibitors (sildenafil, tadalafil) may increase risk of hypotension; strong CYP3A4 inhibitors (ketoconazole, clarithromycin, ritonavir) and CYP2D6 inhibitors (paroxetine) can increase tamsulosin levels; cimetidine may increase levels; diclofenac/warfarin may affect clearance (monitor).

Store at room temperature (below 25°C), protected from moisture and light. Keep in original pack and out of reach of children.
