Type 2 diabetes mellitus (to control blood glucose) when diet and exercise alone are not sufficient; may be used alone or with other antidiabetic medicines as prescribed.
Glimepiride is a sulfonylurea that stimulates pancreatic beta cells to release insulin. It also helps improve peripheral utilization of glucose, thereby lowering blood sugar levels.
Tablet for oral use. Take exactly as prescribed, usually once daily with breakfast or the first main meal; swallow whole with water. Do not skip meals after taking; monitor blood glucose regularly.
Hypoglycaemia (low blood sugar), dizziness, headache, nausea, stomach upset, diarrhoea, weight gain, skin rash
Risk of hypoglycaemia increased with missed meals, excessive exercise, alcohol, or dose changes; carry a fast-acting sugar source. Use with caution in elderly, malnourished patients, and in kidney or liver impairment. Tell your doctor if you have G6PD deficiency (risk of haemolysis), adrenal/pituitary insufficiency, or if you are ill, fasting, or undergoing surgery (dose adjustment may be needed). Seek medical help for severe hypoglycaemia, allergic reactions, jaundice or dark urine. Not for type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis.
Alcohol, insulin and other antidiabetics (e.g., metformin, DPP-4 inhibitors) (increased hypoglycaemia risk), beta-blockers (may mask hypoglycaemia symptoms), fluoroquinolones, azole antifungals (e.g., fluconazole), macrolides (e.g., clarithromycin), sulfonamides, NSAIDs, warfarin, ACE inhibitors, corticosteroids, thiazide/loop diuretics, thyroid hormones, rifampicin, phenytoin
