Type 2 diabetes mellitus (to control blood glucose)
How It Works
Metformin reduces glucose production in the liver and decreases intestinal glucose absorption. It also improves insulin sensitivity in peripheral tissues, helping lower blood sugar without usually causing hypoglycaemia when used alone.
Directions for Use
Take by mouth as directed by doctor, usually once daily with the evening meal or with food. Swallow the sustained-release tablet whole; do not crush, break or chew. Regularly monitor blood glucose; continue diet and exercise advice.
Side Effects
Nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal pain, loss of appetite, metallic taste, headache
Warnings & Precautions
Risk of lactic acidosis (rare but serious), especially with kidney impairment, dehydration, severe infection, shock, liver disease, or excessive alcohol use. Dose adjustment/avoid in reduced renal function; monitor eGFR periodically. Temporarily stop before/after iodinated contrast procedures and during major surgery as advised. Long-term use may cause vitamin B12 deficiency; consider periodic monitoring. Use caution in elderly and in conditions causing poor oxygenation.
Drug Interactions
Alcohol, iodinated contrast media, carbonic anhydrase inhibitors (e.g., topiramate, acetazolamide), cimetidine, diuretics, corticosteroids, beta-agonists, thyroid hormones, antipsychotics (e.g., olanzapine), ACE inhibitors/ARBs and other antidiabetics/insulin (may increase hypoglycaemia risk when combined)
