Injection
Treatment and prevention of Vitamin D deficiency, management of nutritional rickets and osteomalacia, adjunct in osteoporosis/osteopenia due to Vitamin D deficiency
Cholecalciferol is converted in the liver and kidneys to active vitamin D metabolites that increase intestinal absorption of calcium and phosphate. It helps restore normal mineralization of bone and corrects biochemical abnormalities caused by Vitamin D deficiency.
Injection to be administered only by a healthcare professional. Dose and frequency as prescribed (commonly given as deep intramuscular injection; sometimes oral alternatives are used). Follow doctor’s advice regarding calcium intake and follow-up vitamin D/calcium testing.
Injection site pain, nausea, vomiting, constipation, abdominal pain, headache, weakness, increased thirst, increased urination
Use with caution in kidney disease, history of kidney stones, hypercalcemia, hypervitaminosis D, sarcoidosis or other granulomatous disorders. Monitor serum calcium, phosphate, and 25(OH)D especially with high-dose therapy. Overdose may cause hypercalcemia with symptoms like severe nausea/vomiting, confusion, arrhythmias, and dehydration—seek medical help. Not for self-administration unless specifically instructed.
Thiazide diuretics (risk of hypercalcemia), digoxin/other cardiac glycosides (arrhythmia risk with hypercalcemia), anticonvulsants like phenytoin/phenobarbital and rifampicin (reduced vitamin D effect), glucocorticoids (reduced effect), cholestyramine/orlistat (reduced absorption for oral vitamin D), aluminum- or magnesium-containing antacids (caution in renal impairment)
