Management of anxiety disorders, short-term relief of severe anxiety symptoms, muscle spasm/spasticity, adjunct in acute alcohol withdrawal, premedication before procedures, adjunct treatment of acute seizures/status epilepticus (as directed by doctor).
Diazepam is a benzodiazepine that enhances the effect of GABA (an inhibitory neurotransmitter) at the GABA-A receptor. This reduces abnormal brain activity, producing anxiolytic, sedative, muscle-relaxant and anticonvulsant effects.
Take as prescribed by the doctor. Swallow the tablet whole with water, with or without food, preferably at the same time each day. Avoid abruptly stopping; dose should be tapered as advised. Do not drive or operate machinery after taking it.
Drowsiness, dizziness, fatigue, muscle weakness, unsteadiness/ataxia, confusion, impaired coordination, blurred vision, nausea, constipation
Prescription-only benzodiazepine; risk of dependence, tolerance and withdrawal—use the lowest effective dose for the shortest duration. Can cause sedation, falls and impaired alertness; avoid driving. Avoid in severe respiratory insufficiency/sleep apnoea, myasthenia gravis, severe hepatic impairment, acute narrow-angle glaucoma. Use caution in elderly, depression/suicidality, substance use disorder, kidney/liver disease. Do not stop suddenly due to withdrawal (anxiety, tremor, seizures).
Alcohol and other CNS depressants (opioids, sedatives, antihistamines) increase sedation/respiratory depression; opioids carry risk of profound sedation, coma and death. CYP3A4/2C19 inhibitors (ketoconazole, itraconazole, macrolides, cimetidine, fluconazole, omeprazole) may increase levels; inducers (rifampicin, carbamazepine, phenytoin) may reduce effect. Valproate may increase sedation; clozapine may increase respiratory/cardiac risk.
