Not for type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis. Metformin may rarely cause lactic acidosis—seek urgent care for rapid breathing, severe weakness, muscle pain, unusual sleepiness, or abdominal discomfort. Use caution in kidney or liver disease, dehydration, severe infection, alcohol misuse, and in elderly patients; renal function monitoring is advised. Temporary stoppage may be needed before iodinated contrast imaging or major surgery (as per doctor). Risk of hypoglycaemia increases if used with insulin or sulfonylureas.
