Monograph
Tablet
Management of type 2 diabetes mellitus to control post-meal (postprandial) blood sugar; used along with diet and exercise, alone or with other antidiabetic medicines.
Voglibose is an alpha-glucosidase inhibitor. It delays the breakdown and absorption of complex carbohydrates in the intestine, thereby reducing the rise in blood glucose after meals and improving overall glycaemic control.
Oral tablet. Usually taken just before meals or with the first bite of food as advised by the doctor. Follow prescribed dose and diet plan; do not skip meals. If hypoglycaemia occurs with combination therapy, treat with glucose (dextrose) rather than sucrose/table sugar.
Flatulence, abdominal pain, diarrhoea, bloating, nausea
Use with caution in kidney or liver impairment; monitor liver enzymes if advised. Not recommended in diabetic ketoacidosis, inflammatory bowel disease/intestinal obstruction/colonic ulceration or chronic intestinal diseases with digestion/absorption disorders. Risk of hypoglycaemia increases when used with insulin or sulfonylureas; educate on symptoms and management. If severe abdominal symptoms or persistent diarrhoea occur, seek medical advice.
Insulin, sulfonylureas or other antidiabetics (increased hypoglycaemia risk), intestinal adsorbents (reduced effect), digestive enzyme preparations (reduced effect), corticosteroids/thyroid hormones/diuretics/sympathomimetics (may worsen glycaemic control)
Store below 25°C in a cool, dry place. Protect from moisture and direct light. Keep out of reach of children.
