Treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus to improve blood glucose control; used alone or with other antidiabetic medicines along with diet and exercise.
How It Works
Metformin decreases glucose production in the liver and reduces intestinal absorption of glucose. It also improves the body’s sensitivity to insulin, helping cells use glucose more effectively, thereby lowering blood sugar.
Directions for Use
Oral tablet (sustained release). Take exactly as prescribed, usually once daily with the evening meal or as directed. Swallow whole with water; do not crush, chew, or break. Take with food to reduce stomach upset.
Side Effects
Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, loss of appetite, metallic taste, headache
Warnings & Precautions
Risk of lactic acidosis (rare but serious)—seek urgent care for severe weakness, muscle pain, breathing trouble, unusual sleepiness, abdominal discomfort. Use with caution in kidney impairment; dose adjustment/avoidance may be needed and renal function should be monitored. Temporarily stop before/after iodinated contrast procedures and major surgery as advised by doctor. Use caution in liver disease, dehydration, severe infection, or hypoxia (e.g., heart failure, respiratory disease). Long-term use may cause vitamin B12 deficiency; periodic monitoring may be needed. Not for type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis.
