Treatment of susceptible bacterial infections such as ear infections (otitis media), throat/tonsil infections (pharyngitis/tonsillitis), sinusitis, bronchitis, community-acquired pneumonia, skin and soft tissue infections; as prescribed by doctor (commonly in children).
Azithromycin is a macrolide antibiotic that inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit. This stops growth of susceptible bacteria and helps clear infection.
Oral suspension. Shake well before each dose. Measure with dosing syringe/cup and give the prescribed dose once daily (commonly) with or without food (prefer after food if stomach upset). Complete the full course even if symptoms improve. Follow reconstitution instructions on the label if supplied as dry syrup.
Diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, indigestion, headache, dizziness, rash
Use only for bacterial infections (not for viral cold/flu). Do not use if allergic to azithromycin/erythromycin/macrolides. Use with caution in liver disease, history of jaundice with antibiotics, myasthenia gravis, and in patients with heart rhythm problems/QT prolongation or low potassium/magnesium. Seek medical help for severe diarrhoea (possible C. difficile), severe rash, or signs of liver injury (yellowing of eyes/skin, dark urine). Dose adjustment may be needed in hepatic impairment; use as directed in kidney disease.
Antacids containing aluminium/magnesium (separate by at least 2 hours), warfarin/other anticoagulants (increased bleeding risk), digoxin, ciclosporin, antiarrhythmics that prolong QT (e.g., amiodarone, sotalol), fluoroquinolones (additive QT risk), ergot derivatives (avoid), nelfinavir (may increase azithromycin levels)
Store below 25°C, protected from light and moisture. Keep bottle tightly closed. After reconstitution (if applicable), store as per label directions and use within the recommended period; do not freeze.
