Uses & Benefits
Prevention and treatment of nausea and vomiting due to chemotherapy, radiotherapy, or surgery (post-operative nausea/vomiting); may be used for other causes of vomiting as advised by a doctor
How It Works
Ondansetron is a selective 5-HT3 (serotonin) receptor antagonist. It blocks serotonin receptors in the gut and in the brain’s vomiting center, thereby reducing nausea and vomiting.
Directions for Use
Oral syrup: take the measured dose using a measuring cup/spoon as prescribed. Can be taken with or without food; if nausea persists, take at the times advised by the doctor (often before chemotherapy/radiotherapy or as needed post-operatively). Do not exceed the prescribed dose.
Use with caution in patients with heart rhythm problems (QT prolongation), heart failure, bradycardia, electrolyte imbalance (low potassium/magnesium), and severe liver impairment (dose adjustment may be needed). Seek medical help if palpitations, fainting, severe dizziness, allergic reaction, or symptoms of serotonin syndrome occur (agitation, fever, sweating, tremor). Not a substitute for evaluation of persistent vomiting or dehydration, especially in children.
Drug Interactions
Apomorphine (contraindicated), other QT-prolonging drugs (e.g., amiodarone, sotalol, certain antipsychotics/macrolides/fluoroquinolones), serotonergic drugs (SSRIs/SNRIs, MAOIs, linezolid, tramadol) increased serotonin syndrome risk, strong CYP3A4 inducers (rifampicin, carbamazepine, phenytoin) may reduce effect
Storage Instructions
Store below 25°C in a cool, dry place. Protect from light and moisture. Keep bottle tightly closed and out of reach of children.
