Short-term treatment of insomnia (difficulty falling asleep and/or frequent night awakenings)

Zolpidem is a non-benzodiazepine hypnotic that enhances the effect of GABA at GABA-A receptors (preferentially BZ1/omega-1 subtype) in the brain. This produces sedation and helps initiate sleep.

Oral tablet. Take exactly as prescribed, usually once daily at bedtime, immediately before going to sleep. Take on an empty stomach for faster onset; avoid taking with or right after a heavy/fatty meal. Ensure you have at least 7–8 hours available for sleep; do not take an extra dose in the same night.

Prescription-only sleep medicine. May cause next-day drowsiness, impaired driving/operating machinery—avoid such activities after taking. Risk of dependence, tolerance, misuse and withdrawal; use for shortest duration. Rare complex sleep behaviours (sleep-walking, sleep-driving, eating while asleep)—stop and seek medical help if occurs. Use with caution in elderly, liver impairment, respiratory disease (sleep apnoea/COPD), depression or history of substance abuse. Do not use with other sedatives unless advised. Not recommended in severe hepatic impairment.

Alcohol and other CNS depressants (benzodiazepines, opioids, sedating antihistamines, antipsychotics) increase sedation/respiratory depression. CYP3A4 inhibitors (e.g., ketoconazole, clarithromycin, ritonavir) may increase zolpidem levels; CYP3A4 inducers (e.g., rifampicin, carbamazepine, phenytoin, St John’s wort) may reduce effect. Caution with antidepressants/antipsychotics due to additive sedation.

Store below 25°C in a dry place, protected from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
