Short-term treatment of insomnia (difficulty in falling asleep and/or maintaining sleep) in adults when symptoms are severe or disabling

Zolpidem is a non-benzodiazepine hypnotic that enhances the effect of GABA at the GABA-A receptor (preferentially at the benzodiazepine-1 subtype). This reduces neuronal activity in the brain, helping induce sleep and improve sleep continuity.

Take as prescribed by doctor. Usually taken orally once daily at bedtime, immediately before going to sleep. Take on an empty stomach or after a light meal (food, especially high-fat meals, may delay onset). Ensure 7–8 hours available for sleep; do not take a second dose the same night.

Drowsiness, dizziness, headache, nausea, diarrhea, fatigue, impaired coordination, next-day sleepiness, abnormal dreams

May cause next-day drowsiness and impaired driving/operating machinery; avoid activities requiring alertness after use. Risk of dependence, misuse and withdrawal—use the lowest effective dose for the shortest duration. Complex sleep behaviors (sleep-walking, sleep-driving, etc.) can occur; stop and seek medical help if they occur. Use with caution in elderly, liver impairment, respiratory disease (sleep apnea/COPD), depression or history of substance use; dose reduction may be needed. Do not use with other CNS depressants unless advised. Not recommended in children; avoid abrupt discontinuation after prolonged use.

Alcohol (increases sedation/respiratory depression), other CNS depressants (benzodiazepines, opioids, sedating antihistamines, antipsychotics, antidepressants) (additive sedation), CYP3A4 inhibitors (e.g., ketoconazole, clarithromycin, ritonavir) (may increase zolpidem levels), CYP3A4 inducers (e.g., rifampicin, carbamazepine, phenytoin) (may reduce effect)

Store below 25°C in a dry place, protected from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
