What is the ANA Test?

The ANA test looks for antibodies that react against the nucleus of the body's own cells. It is a screening test for autoimmune diseases such as lupus. A positive result is common and is never a diagnosis on its own.

What your ANA Test result means

Negative
Lupus is very unlikely. Other autoimmune conditions are not fully excluded.
Low-titre positive (for example 1:40 to 1:80)
Found in many healthy people, especially women and older adults, and with some infections and medicines. Without matching symptoms it usually needs no further action.
High-titre positive (for example 1:160 or more)
More likely to be linked to an autoimmune disease. The pattern guides the next tests, such as anti-dsDNA or an ANA profile (ENA), read by a doctor with your symptoms.

What is the difference between an ANA test and an ANA profile?
The ANA test is a screen that says whether antinuclear antibodies are present. An ANA profile, ENA panel or ANA blot then identifies which specific antibodies they are, such as anti-Sm, anti-Ro or anti-dsDNA, which points to a particular disease.
Does a positive ANA mean I have lupus?
No. Most people with a positive ANA do not have lupus. Nearly everyone with lupus has a positive ANA, which is why a negative result is reassuring.
How is the ANA test done?
It needs a normal blood sample from a vein. No fasting or special preparation is required.
Can medicines cause a positive ANA?
Yes. Some medicines, such as hydralazine, procainamide, isoniazid and some anti-TNF drugs, can cause a positive ANA and occasionally drug-induced lupus. Tell your doctor what you take.
