What is the Urine Culture Test?

A urine culture test grows bacteria from a urine sample to find out whether there is a urinary tract infection (UTI) and which germ is causing it. The sensitivity part tests which antibiotics work against that germ. It is different from a routine urine test (CUE), which looks at the urine under a microscope and with a dipstick.

Lower counts can be significant in a person with symptoms or in a catheter sample. Mixed growth of several organisms usually means the sample was contaminated.

No growth
No bacteria grew, so a bacterial UTI is unlikely. Antibiotics taken before the sample can also give no growth.
Significant growth with sensitivity

Mixed growth or contamination
Several types of bacteria grew, usually from skin contamination during collection. A fresh, carefully collected sample is often needed.

How do I collect a urine sample for culture?
Wash your hands and the genital area, start passing urine into the toilet, then collect the middle part of the stream in the sterile container without touching the inside. The first morning urine is preferred.
Should I stop antibiotics before a urine culture?
Ideally the sample is given before starting antibiotics. Do not stop a prescribed antibiotic on your own; tell the doctor and the laboratory what you are taking.
What does sensitivity mean in a urine culture report?
