How to choose
Pick by dryness level. Mild dryness: a lotion with glycerin and light emollients. Moderate: shea butter, ceramides or dimethicone. Very dry or rough patches: look for urea (5 to 10%) or lactic acid, or switch to a cream or ointment. Fragrance-free is best for itchy or sensitive skin. Apply within three minutes of a lukewarm shower, on slightly damp skin. Use twice a day on dry areas like shins, elbows and feet. A body lotion that stings on application usually has too much fragrance or alcohol for your skin.
Who really needs this
Anyone with tight, flaky or itchy skin, particularly in winter or air-conditioned workplaces, after frequent hand-washing, or on long travel. Children and older adults often need it daily. Persistent scaly, red, cracked or weeping patches may be eczema, psoriasis or a fungal infection and need a doctor's diagnosis, not a stronger lotion.
