Augpen DS Suspension contains Amoxycillin (400mg/5ml) + Clavulanic Acid (57mg/5ml). It belongs to the Penicillin (aminopenicillin) + beta-lactamase inhibitor class of medicines.

How Augpen DS Suspension works

Amoxicillin is a penicillin antibiotic that kills bacteria by inhibiting cell wall synthesis. Clavulanic acid is a beta-lactamase inhibitor that protects amoxicillin from enzyme breakdown, extending its spectrum against beta-lactamase–producing bacteria.

How to take Augpen DS Suspension

Oral suspension: reconstitute with boiled and cooled water up to the mark and shake well. Give the dose as prescribed by the doctor, preferably at the start of a meal to reduce stomach upset. Shake well before each dose, measure with a dosing spoon/syringe, complete the full course, and do not stop early even if symptoms improve.

Take it exactly as your doctor prescribed. Do not change the dose or stop early on your own.

Missed dose and overdose

If you miss a dose

Take it as soon as you remember. If your next dose is almost due, skip the one you missed — never take two doses together to catch up.

If you take too much

An overdose of this medicine can cause vomiting, severe loose motions and, rarely, fits. Do not wait for symptoms to appear — go to the nearest emergency department and take the pack or strip with you.

Side effects of Augpen DS Suspension

Most side effects of Augpen DS are mild and settle as the body adjusts. Reported side effects include:

Warnings and precautions

Prescription antibiotic—use only for bacterial infections. Do not use in patients with allergy to penicillins/cephalosporins or history of severe hypersensitivity reactions. Use with caution in liver disease; may rarely cause hepatitis/jaundice—seek care if yellowing of eyes/skin, dark urine, severe fatigue. Dose adjustment may be needed in kidney impairment. Prolonged use may cause superinfection. If severe diarrhoea, blood in stools, or severe skin rash occurs, stop and consult a doctor immediately.

Do not take Augpen DS if

Not for anyone with a known allergy to this medicine or to any ingredient in the pack. Not for anyone with a known penicillin allergy.

Interactions with other medicines

Warfarin/other anticoagulants (may increase INR/bleeding risk), allopurinol (increased rash risk), probenecid (increases amoxicillin levels), methotrexate (reduced clearance/toxicity risk), mycophenolate mofetil (reduced active metabolite exposure), oral typhoid vaccine (reduced efficacy)

How to store Augpen DS Suspension

Store unreconstituted powder in a cool, dry place below 25°C, protected from moisture. After reconstitution, store in a refrigerator (2–8°C), do not freeze, keep tightly closed, shake well before use, and discard remaining suspension as per pack instructions (commonly within 7 days).

Expert advice for Augpen DS Suspension

Your child must complete the entire course of antibiotics. Stopping too soon may cause the bacteria to multiply again, become resistant, or cause another infection. Your child may have a bitter taste in the mouth after the intake of Augpen -DS Suspension. Eating citrus fruit or sipping plenty of water or fruit juice may help. Encourage your child to drink plenty of water in case diarrhea develops as a side effect. Never give Augpen -DS Suspension until and unless prescribed by the doctor. You must also never share your child’s medicine with anyone else even if they show similar symptoms. Do not give Augpen -DS Suspension to treat common cold and flu-like symptoms caused by viruses. Never save medicine for future illnesses. It cannot be said whether the same medicine will work on future infections. Check ‘expiry’ before giving Augpen -DS Suspension to your child. Immediately discard all the expired medicines. Stop Augpen -DS Suspension immediately if your child develops an itchy rash, facial swelling, or breathing difficulty. Report to the doctor without any delay.
