How Benadryl CR Syrup works

Diphenhydramine is a first‑generation H1 antihistamine that reduces allergy symptoms and has a cough-suppressant/sedative effect. Ammonium chloride acts as an expectorant to loosen mucus, sodium citrate helps reduce throat irritation by alkalinising secretions, and menthol provides a cooling, soothing effect.

How to take Benadryl CR Syrup

Oral syrup. Shake well before use and measure with a dosing cup/spoon. Take as advised by a doctor; commonly taken 2–3 times daily. Can be taken with or without food; if stomach upset occurs, take after food. Avoid driving/operating machinery due to drowsiness.

Take it exactly as your doctor prescribed. Do not change the dose or stop early on your own.

Missed dose and overdose

If you miss a dose

Take the missed dose of Benadryl CR as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed one and carry on with the usual schedule. Do not take two doses together to make up for a missed dose.

If you take too much

Taking more Benadryl CR than prescribed can be harmful. If you suspect an overdose, contact a doctor or go to the nearest emergency department at once, and carry the pack or strip with you. In India the emergency number is 112.

Side effects of Benadryl CR Syrup

Most side effects of Benadryl CR are mild and settle as the body adjusts. Reported side effects include:

Warnings and precautions

May cause marked drowsiness—avoid driving, alcohol and other sedatives. Use with caution in glaucoma, enlarged prostate/urinary retention, asthma/COPD, liver disease, and in elderly (higher risk of confusion/falls). Not recommended for children below the age advised on the label/doctor due to risk of excessive sedation and breathing problems. Do not use for persistent/chronic cough (smoking, asthma) unless advised by a doctor. Seek medical advice if symptoms persist >3–5 days, high fever, wheeze, or thick green/bloody mucus occurs.

Interactions with other medicines

Alcohol, benzodiazepines and other CNS depressants (additive sedation), MAO inhibitors (increased anticholinergic/CNS effects), other antihistamines/cold-cough products (duplicate therapy), anticholinergics (increased dry mouth/urinary retention), opioids (increased sedation/respiratory depression)
