How Dentasep Gel works

Dentasep Gel is a combination of two medicines: Chlorhexidine Gluconate and Metronidazole. Chlorhexidine Gluconate is an antiseptic and disinfectant. It works by binding to the surface of teeth, inner cheeks, and gums. This kills the infectious microorganisms that cause gum disease, tartar, and other mouth infections. Metronidazole is an antibiotic that kills bacteria and other infectious microorganisms by damaging the DNA.

How to take Dentasep Gel

Check the label for directions before use. Gently apply the gel to the affected area inside your mouth. Refrain from eating or drinking immediately after applying the gel.

Take it exactly as your doctor prescribed. Do not change the dose or stop early on your own.

Missed dose and overdose

If you miss a dose

If you miss a dose of Dentasep Gel, skip it and continue with your normal schedule. Do not double the dose.

If you take too much

An overdose of this medicine is unlikely from skin use, but swallowing an antiseptic is dangerous and needs immediate medical attention. It can cause vomiting, severe loose motions and nerve symptoms. Do not wait for symptoms to appear — go to the nearest emergency department and take the pack or strip with you.

Most side effects of Dentasep are mild and settle as the body adjusts. Reported side effects include:

Safety advice for Dentasep Gel

Warnings and precautions

For external use only. Keep away from the eyes and the inside of the mouth and nose unless the product is made for that purpose. Do not use a strong antiseptic repeatedly on an open wound — clean running water and soap around the edges are usually better, and harsh antiseptics slow healing. See a doctor for a deep or dirty wound, an animal bite, a wound that will not stop bleeding, or one that becomes red, swollen, warm or discharges. Check that your tetanus cover is current after any dirty or penetrating wound. Finish the whole course even after you feel better. Do not drink any alcohol while taking metronidazole, ornidazole or tinidazole, or for the period after the course that your doctor states — the combination causes severe flushing, vomiting and a racing heart. Report severe or watery loose motions during or after the course rather than treating them yourself. Tetracyclines stain developing teeth and are avoided in young children and in pregnancy. Antibiotics do not work against colds, flu or most sore throats, which are caused by viruses.

Not for anyone with a known allergy to this medicine or to any ingredient in the pack. Not for use on large burns or deep wounds without medical advice.

Interactions with other medicines

No significant interactions are expected. Antacids, iron, zinc and calcium reduce the absorption of tetracyclines — separate them by a couple of hours. Tell your doctor if you take a blood thinner.

How to store Dentasep Gel

Store below 30°C, away from direct sunlight. Close the cap tightly after each use. Keep out of the reach of children.

Dentasep Gel is given for the treatment of mouth infection and its associated symptoms such as ulcers and swelling in the gums. Avoid eating, drinking, or brushing your teeth just after using this medication. Do not use Dentasep Gel if you have deep oral ulcers or throat infections. Stop using this medicine and inform your doctor if any irritation occurs. If symptoms persist for more than seven days, consult your doctor. Along with using Dentasep Gel maintain good oral hygiene by brushing your teeth twice daily with a soft-bristle brush. Have regular dental checkups at intervals recommended by your dentist (this is normally at least once a year).
