Dettol Antiseptic Liquid contains Chloroxylenol 4.8% w/v, Terpineol 9% v/v, Absolute alcohol 13.1% v/v (with excipients). It belongs to the Topical antiseptic (chloroxylenol-based phenolic antiseptic) class of medicines.

How Dettol Antiseptic Liquid works

Chloroxylenol is a broad-spectrum antiseptic that damages microbial cell walls and enzymes, reducing bacteria and some fungi on skin and surfaces. Terpineol and alcohol enhance antimicrobial action and help cleansing.

How to take Dettol Antiseptic Liquid

For external use only. Always dilute before use: for minor wounds/cuts and as skin antiseptic, add a small amount to water and use to clean the area; for bathing/hygiene use dilute in a bucket of water; for household disinfection dilute in water and apply to surfaces/floors then allow contact time before wiping. Use as per pack label/doctor advice; do not swallow.

Take it exactly as your doctor prescribed. Do not change the dose or stop early on your own.

Missed dose and overdose

If you miss a dose

Take the missed dose of Dettol Antiseptic as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed one and carry on with the usual schedule. Do not take two doses together to make up for a missed dose.

If you take too much

Taking more Dettol Antiseptic than prescribed can be harmful. If you suspect an overdose, contact a doctor or go to the nearest emergency department at once, and carry the pack or strip with you. In India the emergency number is 112.

Side effects of Dettol Antiseptic Liquid

Most side effects of Dettol Antiseptic are mild and settle as the body adjusts. Reported side effects include:

• redness
• dryness
• allergic rash
• eye irritation (on contact)

Stop the medicine and seek help immediately for a rash, swelling of the face or lips, wheezing or difficulty breathing. Tell your doctor about any side effect that persists or worries you.

Warnings and precautions

Do not use undiluted on skin. Avoid contact with eyes, mouth and mucous membranes; if contact occurs, rinse with plenty of water. Do not ingest; if swallowed seek medical help/poison control. Stop use if irritation or allergy occurs. Keep away from children. Do not use on large/deep wounds, severe burns or serious skin infections without medical advice. Flammable due to alcohol—keep away from heat/flames.

Interactions with other medicines

No clinically significant drug interactions expected with topical use; avoid using concurrently with other strong antiseptics/skin irritants on the same area as it may increase irritation.

How to store Dettol Antiseptic Liquid

Store tightly closed at room temperature (below 30°C), away from direct sunlight, heat and moisture. Keep container upright and out of reach of children.
