Gabapentin (400mg) + Nortriptyline (10mg/gm)
Gabastone Nt. is used for neuropathic (nerve) pain such as diabetic neuropathy, post-herpetic neuralgia, radiculopathy/sciatica-related neuropathic pain, and other chronic nerve pain conditions as prescribed.
Medically reviewed by Dr. Balaji Krishnan, MBBS · Updated August 2026
Gabastone Nt. contains Gabapentin (400mg) + Nortriptyline (10mg/gm). It belongs to the Gabapentinoid (antiepileptic) + Tricyclic antidepressant (TCA) class of medicines.
Gabapentin reduces abnormal nerve signalling by binding to the alpha-2-delta subunit of voltage-gated calcium channels in the CNS, thereby decreasing release of excitatory neurotransmitters. Nortriptyline (a tricyclic antidepressant) increases levels of norepinephrine and serotonin in pain pathways and also modulates sodium channels, enhancing pain control.
Take by mouth exactly as prescribed, usually once daily at night or in divided doses. Can be taken with or without food; taking after food may reduce stomach upset. Swallow whole with water; do not stop suddenly without medical advice.
Take it exactly as your doctor prescribed. Do not change the dose or stop early on your own.
Take the missed dose of Gabastone Nt. as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed one and carry on with the usual schedule. Do not take two doses together to make up for a missed dose.
Taking more Gabastone Nt. than prescribed can be harmful. If you suspect an overdose, contact a doctor or go to the nearest emergency department at once, and carry the pack or strip with you. In India the emergency number is 112.
Most side effects of Gabastone Nt. are mild and settle as the body adjusts. Reported side effects include:
Stop the medicine and seek help immediately for a rash, swelling of the face or lips, wheezing or difficulty breathing. Tell your doctor about any side effect that persists or worries you.
| Pregnancy | Use with caution / Consult doctor (use only if benefit outweighs risk) |
|---|---|
| Alcohol | Avoid (increases dizziness/drowsiness and risk of breathing problems) |
| Habit forming | No |
May cause sleepiness/dizziness—avoid driving or operating machinery until you know its effects. Do not stop abruptly (risk of withdrawal symptoms and worsening pain/seizures with gabapentin). Use with caution in elderly, kidney disease (dose adjustment for gabapentin), glaucoma, urinary retention/prostate enlargement, heart disease/arrhythmias, and history of bipolar disorder or suicidal thoughts (monitor mood/behavior). Nortriptyline can cause orthostatic hypotension and may worsen angle-closure glaucoma. Seek urgent help for suicidal ideation, severe rash/allergy, breathing difficulty, or severe swelling.
Alcohol and other CNS depressants (opioids, benzodiazepines, sedating antihistamines) increase drowsiness/respiratory depression; MAO inhibitors (contraindicated with nortriptyline); SSRIs/SNRIs and other serotonergic drugs (risk of serotonin syndrome); medicines that prolong QT interval/antiarrhythmics (additive cardiac risk with nortriptyline); anticholinergics (increased dry mouth/constipation/urinary retention); gabapentin absorption reduced by aluminum/magnesium antacids (separate by at least 2 hours).
Store below 25°C in a cool, dry place, protected from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
