A substitute contains the same active ingredient (salt), in the same strength, as Melamine Lotion 100 ml. The medicine inside is the same — the brand name, manufacturer and price are what differ.
All medicines sold in India, branded or generic, must meet the quality standards set by the national drug regulator (CDSCO). A lower price does not mean lower quality.
Please confirm with your doctor or pharmacist before switching brands — they will check that the strength and form match your prescription.
Melamine Lotion 100 ml contains Calamine 8% w/v + Camphor 0.1% w/v + Diphenhydramine 1% w/v. It belongs to the Skin preparation, Counter-irritant / topical anti-inflammatory and Antihistamine / leukotriene antagonist class of medicines.
This medicine combines 3 active ingredients: Calamine, Camphor and Diphenhydramine. Calamine acts on the skin to treat or soothe the condition it is prescribed for. Camphor is applied to the skin over a painful area, where it produces a warming or cooling sensation and reduces local pain and inflammation. Diphenhydramine blocks the chemical messengers your body releases during an allergic reaction, which relieves sneezing, a running nose, watering eyes and itching.
Clean and dry the affected area, then apply a thin layer and rub it in gently. Wash your hands before and after use, unless your hands are the area being treated. This is for use on the skin only — do not swallow it. Follow the dose and the duration written on your prescription.
Take it exactly as your doctor prescribed. Do not change the dose or stop early on your own.
Apply it as soon as you remember. If it is nearly time for the next application, skip the missed one — applying extra does not make up for it.
An overdose of this medicine is unlikely from skin use; swallowing the preparation may cause stomach upset. It is unlikely from skin use, but swallowing these preparations can be serious, particularly in children. It can cause severe drowsiness, a fast heartbeat, confusion and, in children, agitation and fits. Do not wait for symptoms to appear — go to the nearest emergency department and take the pack or strip with you.
Most side effects of Melamine are mild and settle as the body adjusts. Reported side effects include:
Stop the medicine and seek help immediately for a rash, swelling of the face or lips, wheezing or difficulty breathing. Tell your doctor about any side effect that persists or worries you.

For external use only, unless the pack says otherwise. Stop if the skin becomes more irritated, and see a doctor if the condition worsens or spreads. Do a small test patch first if you have sensitive skin. For external use only. Keep it away from the eyes, mouth and broken skin. Do not apply a heating pad or hot water bottle over the treated area — this can cause a burn. Do not bandage tightly over it unless your doctor has told you to. Wash your hands thoroughly after applying, unless your hands are the area being treated. Stop if the skin becomes severely irritated or blisters. Older antihistamines cause marked drowsiness — do not drive or operate machinery until you know how this affects you. Tell your doctor promptly about any change in mood, sleep, agitation or unusual thoughts while taking montelukast; this is uncommon but recognised. This relieves the symptoms of an allergy; it does not treat the cause, and it is not a treatment for an acute asthma attack. Seek emergency care for swelling of the lips, tongue or throat, or difficulty breathing.
Not for anyone with a known allergy to this medicine or to any ingredient in the pack. Not for use on broken or infected skin unless prescribed. Not for use on broken, infected or badly inflamed skin. The sedating antihistamines are not suitable for very young children, or for people with glaucoma or an enlarged prostate, without medical advice.
No significant interactions are expected from preparations used on the skin. Topical anti-inflammatory gels add to the effect of the same medicine taken by mouth; tell your doctor if you use both. Alcohol, sleeping tablets and other sedating medicines add to the drowsiness. Tell your doctor about all cold and cough preparations — many already contain an antihistamine.
Store below 30°C, away from direct sunlight. Close the cap tightly after each use. Keep out of the reach of children.
Apply a thin layer to clean, dry skin. Wash your hands after use. Use a small amount and rub it in well. See a doctor if the pain has not improved within the period stated on the pack. Taking it at bedtime reduces the impact of any drowsiness. Identify and avoid your triggers where you can — dust, pollen, cold air.
