Composition of Parkin Plus Tablet

Parkin Plus Tablet contains Trifluoperazine + Trihexyphenidyl. It belongs to the Antipsychotic and Anti-dementia / anti-parkinsonian agent class of medicines.

Uses of Parkin Plus Tablet

  • Schizophrenia
  • Bipolar disorder
  • Severe agitation
  • Psychosis
  • Alzheimer's disease
  • Dementia
  • Parkinson's disease

Benefits of Parkin Plus Tablet

In Schizophrenia
Parkin Plus quietens the hallucinations, fixed false beliefs and disordered thinking of schizophrenia, and taken regularly it prevents relapse.
In Bipolar disorder
Parkin Plus brings an episode of mania under control and helps keep mood stable between episodes.
In Severe agitation
Parkin Plus calms severe agitation and distress so the person is safe and can be cared for.
In Psychosis
Parkin Plus restores a clearer grip on reality by settling the brain chemistry behind hallucinations and delusions.
In Alzheimer's disease
Parkin Plus supports the brain's memory chemistry, which can steady memory, thinking and daily functioning for a time. It slows the effects of the disease rather than reversing them.
In Dementia
Parkin Plus helps maintain attention, memory and the ability to manage daily tasks for longer in dementia.
In Parkinson's disease
Parkin Plus replaces or mimics the dopamine the brain is losing, easing the stiffness, slowness and tremor of Parkinson's so movement is freer.

How Parkin Plus Tablet works

This medicine combines 2 active ingredients: Trifluoperazine and Trihexyphenidyl. Trifluoperazine rebalances the chemical messengers in the brain that, in excess, produce hallucinations, delusions and severe agitation. Trihexyphenidyl supports the chemical messengers in the brain that control memory, attention and movement.

How to take Parkin Plus Tablet

Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water. Do not chew, crush or break it unless your doctor has told you to. Take it with or after food, usually at night. Taking it at about the same time each day helps you remember. Follow the dose and the duration written on your prescription.

Take it exactly as your doctor prescribed. Do not change the dose or stop early on your own.

Missed dose and overdose

If you miss a dose

Take it as soon as you remember. If your next dose is almost due, skip the one you missed — never take two doses together to catch up.

If you take too much

An overdose of this medicine can cause deep drowsiness, a severe fall in blood pressure, abnormal movements and heart rhythm disturbance. It can cause severe confusion, abnormal movements, a very slow pulse and collapse. Do not wait for symptoms to appear — go to the nearest emergency department and take the pack or strip with you.

Side effects of Parkin Plus Tablet

Most side effects of Parkin Plus are mild and settle as the body gets used to the medicine. The ones reported most often are:

  • Drowsiness
  • Weight gain
  • Tremor
  • Stiffness
  • Restlessness
  • Dry mouth
  • Dizziness on standing up
  • Nausea
  • Loss of appetite
  • Loose motions
  • Dizziness
  • Sleep disturbance
  • Involuntary movements

Warnings and precautions

Report any tremor, stiffness, restlessness or uncontrollable movements of the face, tongue or limbs to your doctor promptly — these can become persistent if not addressed. Seek emergency care for high fever with severe muscle stiffness, confusion and sweating. This is rare but life-threatening. These medicines can raise blood sugar, cholesterol and weight. Your doctor will monitor them — keep those appointments. Never stop suddenly; your doctor will reduce the dose gradually. Take care in hot weather — this group affects how your body regulates temperature. Never stop a Parkinson's medicine suddenly — this can cause a severe and dangerous deterioration. Dose timing matters a great deal in Parkinson's disease. Take it at exactly the times prescribed. Report sudden daytime sleep attacks, hallucinations, or new gambling, spending or other impulsive behaviour — these are recognised effects and the dose may need review. Rise slowly from sitting or lying; a drop in blood pressure on standing is common.

Do not take Parkin Plus if

Not for anyone with a known allergy to this medicine or to any ingredient in the pack. Your doctor will assess suitability if you have heart disease, Parkinson's disease or dementia. Your doctor will assess suitability if you have heart, eye or psychiatric conditions.

Interactions with other medicines

Alcohol and sedatives add to the drowsiness. Tell your doctor about any medicine that affects heart rhythm. Anti-emetics such as metoclopramide and some antipsychotics can worsen Parkinson's symptoms. High-protein meals can reduce the absorption of levodopa — ask your doctor about timing.

How to store Parkin Plus Tablet
