How Sucralcoat works

Sucralcoat O Suspension is a combination of two medicines: Sucralfate and Oxetacaine / Oxethazaine. Sucralfate is a medication to treat ulcers. It covers the damaged ulcer tissue in the stomach and protects it from acid or injury to facilitate healing. Oxetacaine / Oxethazaine is a local anesthetic whose numbing effect provides fast relief from pain caused due to ulcers or acidic injury in the stomach.

How to take Sucralcoat

Take this medicine in the dose and duration as advised by your doctor. Check the label for directions before use. Measure it with a measuring cup and take it by mouth. Shake well before use. Sucralcoat O Suspension is to be taken on an empty stomach.

Take it exactly as your doctor prescribed. Do not change the dose or stop early on your own.

Missed dose and overdose

If you miss a dose

If you miss a dose of Sucralcoat O Suspension, take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular schedule. Do not double the dose.

If you take too much

An overdose of this medicine may cause bloating and loose motions. It can cause severe loose motions or constipation and disturb the body's salt balance. Do not wait for symptoms to appear — go to the nearest emergency department and take the pack or strip with you.

Side effects of Sucralcoat

Most side effects of Sucralcoat are mild and settle as the body adjusts. Reported side effects include:

Warnings and precautions

Loose motions with high fever, blood in the stool or severe abdominal pain need a doctor, not a home remedy. Oral rehydration salts and fluids matter more than any medicine when you have loose motions — dehydration is the real danger, especially in children and older people. Take a probiotic a couple of hours apart from an antibiotic so the antibiotic does not simply kill it. Do not use an anti-motility medicine such as loperamide if you have a fever or blood in the stool. This is for short-term relief. See a doctor if you need it most days for more than a couple of weeks. Seek urgent care for chest pain that spreads to the arm or jaw, comes with sweating or breathlessness — do not assume it is acidity. Antacids interfere with the absorption of many other medicines. Take them at least two hours apart from anything else.

Do not take Sucralcoat if

Not for anyone with a known allergy to this medicine or to any ingredient in the pack. Probiotics are used with caution in people whose immune system is significantly suppressed. Magnesium-containing antacids are avoided in significant kidney disease.

Interactions with other medicines

Antibiotics reduce the effect of probiotics taken at the same time. Reduces the absorption of thyroid tablets, iron, and several antibiotics — separate them by at least two hours.

How to store Sucralcoat

Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from direct sunlight. Some probiotic preparations ask to be refrigerated — follow the pack. Keep out of the reach of children.

Avoid drinking anything immediately after taking this medicine as that can reduce its effectiveness. Do not take antacid medicines half an hour before or after taking this medicine. It may cause constipation. Drink plenty of water and eat more high-fibre foods. Inform your doctor if it becomes severe or doesn’t go away. It may take 4-6 weeks or more for the ulcers to heal completely. Do not stop taking the medicine until your doctor tells you to.
