Treatment of high cholesterol (hypercholesterolaemia, mixed dyslipidaemia), reduction of LDL and triglycerides, prevention of cardiovascular events (heart attack, stroke) in at-risk patients
Atorvastatin is an HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor (statin). It reduces cholesterol production in the liver, leading to increased LDL receptor activity and enhanced clearance of LDL cholesterol from blood. It also modestly lowers triglycerides and can raise HDL.
Tablet for oral use. Take as prescribed, usually once daily at the same time each day, with or without food. Continue diet and lifestyle measures; do not stop without medical advice.
Headache, nausea, diarrhoea, constipation, abdominal pain, dyspepsia, muscle pain (myalgia), joint pain, increased liver enzymes
Contraindicated in active liver disease or unexplained persistent elevation of liver enzymes. Seek medical help for unexplained muscle pain/weakness, especially with fever or dark urine (risk of myopathy/rhabdomyolysis). Use with caution in kidney problems, hypothyroidism, elderly, and in heavy alcohol use. Periodic lipid profile and liver function monitoring may be advised.
Strong CYP3A4 inhibitors (clarithromycin, erythromycin, ketoconazole/itraconazole, protease inhibitors), grapefruit juice (large amounts), cyclosporine, gemfibrozil and other fibrates, niacin, colchicine, amiodarone/verapamil/diltiazem, warfarin (monitor INR)
Store below 25°C in a dry place, protected from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
