Uses & Benefits
Treatment of elevated intraocular pressure in open-angle glaucoma and ocular hypertension
How It Works
Brimonidine is an alpha-2 adrenergic agonist that reduces aqueous humour production and increases uveoscleral outflow. Timolol is a non-selective beta-blocker that decreases aqueous humour formation, together lowering intraocular pressure.
Directions for Use
For ophthalmic use only. Instill 1 drop into the affected eye(s) as prescribed (commonly twice daily, about 12 hours apart). Wash hands, avoid touching dropper tip, remove contact lenses before use and reinsert after at least 15 minutes; use punctal occlusion for 1–2 minutes to reduce systemic absorption.
Use with caution in patients with asthma/COPD, bradycardia, heart block, heart failure, hypotension (due to timolol). May cause systemic beta-blocker effects; seek help for wheezing, breathing difficulty, slow pulse, fainting. Caution in patients on antihypertensives, cardiac drugs, or with depression (brimonidine). Do not use in active eye infection unless advised. If using other eye drops, keep 5–10 minutes gap. Discard if solution changes color/contains particles.
Drug Interactions
Other beta-blockers (systemic/ocular), calcium channel blockers, digoxin, antiarrhythmics (risk of bradycardia/AV block), antihypertensives, CNS depressants/alcohol (increased drowsiness), MAO inhibitors and tricyclic antidepressants (may alter brimonidine effects), clonidine (additive effects)
